I love sandwiches like my copycat Big Mac or a pizza grilled cheese for lunch. Another favorite is my California Club sandwich. It is a delicious twist on the classic. It incorporates the fresh flavors of the Golden State, specifically creamy avocado. This hearty sandwich layers crisp bacon, juicy tomatoes, creamy avocado, and tender turkey breast between slices of toasted bread.

It is perfect for a satisfying lunch or light dinner on these hot summer nights. It's super easy to make, too!

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

a collage showing mayonnaise, bread, spinach, turkey, tomato, swiss cheese, and avocado.
  • Bacon: To save time, I like to use microwave bacon. I like the brand Hormel Black Label.
  • Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise haters, I hear you! You could also use ranch or Caesar dressing for a creamy spread. I find the sandwich to be a bit dry without a spread.
  • Bread: Thinner bread works better for this layered sandwich.
  • Turkey Lunch Meat: I like Dietz and Watson. Boar's Head is also good. You could even use chicken lunch meat instead.
  • Avocado: Look for avocados that are dark in color and give a little when squeezed.

Ingredient Spotlight Roma Tomatoes

I like to use Roma tomatoes on sandwiches as they have a firm texture that holds their shape. They are also low in moisture, so your sandwich won't get soggy.

Krystle's Tips

  1. Toast Your Bread: Don't skip toasting your bread; it provides a great crunch. If you're making these for a crowd, you can also toast your bread in the oven for 4-5 minutes per side at 350 degrees F.
  2. Use a Serrated Knife: This will easily slice through the bread without mangling it for picture-perfect triangles.
  3. Use toothpicks to hold the sandwich together if needed.

Seasoning

Season your tomato and avocado with salt and pepper for even more flavor.

Crunched for time? I love grabbing a sandwich at Subway. Did you know their 6-inch sub bread has as much calcium as a glass of milk? No more fast food guilt!

Overall, the next time you're in the baking aisle pick up some high calcium bread.  I'd love you to try my club sandwich recipe, you won't be disappointed! It would also make fabulous French toast, croutons, or even bread pudding!

What do you think of this California Club Sandwich? How can you incorporate more calcium into your diet from the baked good aisle?
