I love margaritas! So far we've featured fun flavors like pineapple and strawberry on the blog. Today I'm sharing another favorite: frozen watermelon margaritas. Because watermelon is over 90% water they are super refreshing and you can barely taste the alcohol. With only a few common ingredients these are perfect for BBQs, taco Tuesday, or just treating yourself.  Can't get enough? Try our watermelon fruit cake too.

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

ingredients including watermelon, limes, granulated sugar, patron tequila, and Cointreau.
  • Watermelon: Pick a seedless watermelon that feels heavy for its size. This indicates ripeness. I also look for a yellow (not white) field spot. Frozen melon is almost as good as fresh as its frozen at peak ripeness. Avoid precut watermelon which I find to be less sweet and more expensive.
  • Lime: Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor. To get the most juice out of your lime roll it on the counter and microwave it for 20-30 seconds.
  • Tequila: Choose a blanco tequila for a neutral slightly sweet flavor. My go to brand is Patron. Jose Cuervo is a great budget brand.
  • Triple Sec: Any orange flavored liqueur will work. I'm partial to Cointreau. Dekuyper is a great budget option.

Krystle's Tips

  1. Plan ahead: Cube and freeze watermelon in advance if possible. This will give you a thicker cocktail with less ice.
  2. Taste as you go: If your watermelon is super sweet you may need a touch more lime juice. Not sweet enough? Add a bit more sugar or simple syrup.

This looks so refreshing! I don’t drink alcohol, but I bet this would make an amazing watermelon mocktail too. Thinking of trying it with just the fruit, lime, and maybe a splash of sparkling water.
