My Blue Hawaii Cocktail Will Transport You To Paradise

I love tropical cocktails like Pina Coladas and pineapple margaritas. Another of my favorites is the Blue Hawaii. I first had it at beach bar while in Delaware, and knew I needed to recreate it at home. This Blue Hawaii cocktail will transport you straight to a place with pale white sand and softly crashing waves. It tastes like the tropics with delicious pineapple and coconut flavors. It perfect for relaxing after work, pool parties, BBQs and patriotic holiday gatherings like the 4th of July.

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

a counter with blue curacao, coconut rum, and pineapple juice.
  • Coconut Rum: My favorite brand to use in this recipe is Malibu. If you're not a fan of coconut white rum can be used instead.
  • Pineapple Juice: You can use juice from a can of pineapple rings, or buy individual cans in the juice aisle.
  • Blue Curacao: I like the brand Dekuyper.

Krystle's Tips

  1. Chill: Chill all ingredients as well as your glass for an icy cold drink.
  2. Pineapple Ice: Avoid a watered-down drink by making pineapple juice ice cubes.
  3. Shake Shake Shake: You can use a cocktail shaker, a mason jar, or even a travel mug. Whatever you have is fine as long as everything gets mixed together. We are not fancy here!

Tropical Glass Idea

For a tropical vibe: use a hollowed-out coconut or pineapple.

Why Is My Drink Green?

It comes down to the color of your pineapple juice. If your juice is very yellow in color it can combine with the blue curacao to appear greener in color. To fix try adding a little more blue curacao or blue food coloring.

How Can I Make This For a Crowd?

To serve 10 people, multiply your ingredients by ten like this:
10 Ounces Coconut Rum
10 Ounces Blue Curacao
20 Ounces Pineapple Juice

Serve in a pitcher or punch bowl and garnish with fruit if desired.

2 blue rum cocktails on a bamboo placement with a tropical flower in the background.

This cocktail is a must try before summer is out! It is simple to put together. The only part I changed, was I strained the cocktail from the shaker, pouring it over fresh ice in the glass. Perfect cocktail to sip on during a hot day in August. Thank you for this lovely recipe!

    7. For the non-alcoholic version, how much of the coconut extract do I use?

      1. Krystle Smith says:

        Hi Ashley,

Coconut extract is very potent, so I'd start with a little maybe 1/8 or 1/4 teaspoon and add more to taste.

The first time i had this was more than 15 years ago on Macinac Island. I LOVED it! Next time I had it the bartender accidentally made me a Blue Motorcycle instead. Not the same. Not at all! This is so much better! Love having the actual recipe for this. It's so YUMMY!
