Amaretto Sour

Save For Later

This amaretto sour cocktail is super easy and requires only three common ingredients. It is bright and refreshing; and must-know recipe for entertaining.

2 amaretto sour cocktails garnished with an orange wedge and a cherry.

The Amaretto Sour is a great classic drink to add to your cocktail repertoire. It is a staple in our house alongside other classics like the Bahama Mama, the pina colada, and Tequila Sunrise.  We love it as a nightcap or while sipping with friends on the front porch.

It's also great for dinner parties, poker nights, or girl's night in. The best part is that it's crazy simple to make, too. Let me show you some bartender secrets to help you make this cocktail at home in no time.

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

a collage showing sprite, sour mix, amaretto, and maraschino cherries.
  • Sweet and Sour Mix: Look for it in the mixers section of your grocery store near the tonic water.
  • Sprite: Any lemon-lime soda will work here; Sprite is just my favorite. You could also use ginger ale.

Ingredient Spotlight: Amaretto

  • Amaretto: Amaretto is a sweet liquor made from apricot kernels. It has a nutty almond flavor with notes of brown sugar. My favorite brand is Amaretto di Amore and Disaronno. You can also use homemade amaretto in this recipe too.

Krystle's Tips

  1. Ice Cubes: Use sour mix or orange juice to make ice cubes to avoid a watered-down drink.
    • You can also make crystal-clear ice by boiling distilled water and then freezing.
  2. Chill Your Glass: This will keep your cocktail ice cold longer.
  3. Adjust To Your Taste: Add more or less sour mix to reach your desired level of sweetness.
  4. Serve a Crowd: Multiply the ingredients by your number of guests to serve in a pitcher or as a punch. As long as you keep the ratio of 3 parts alcohol to 2 parts sour mix, it will taste perfect.

This is a great recipe and was a big hit! I was wondering if I could freeze the sour mix and amaretto to make slushy - adding Sprite right before serving

      Hi Mary Ellen,

Other readers have tried this and said it works! (alcohol won't freeze 100% but you should get a slushie like consistency).

Love amaretto sours! Pro tip, use lava premium sweet and sour mix for this. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

  5. I wonder what it would be like if we used ginger ale instead of Sprite? Not the biggest Sprite fan, and have some Ginger Ale on hand already, lol. Any thoughts?

    1. Krystle Smith says:

100% fine any soda like ginger ale will work!

I'm not usually an amaretto fan, but I really like it in this drink. The sweet & sour mix and the Sprite really rein in the amaretto flavor and add a lovely tanginess that I truly enjoy. Definitely love the garnish of oranges and limes; a nice fresh squeeze is perfection.
