History/Origin
It originated at a bar in Alaska called The Peanut Farm in 1987. Legend has it that it was created by a bartender named Doug Schmidt. When he made the drink for a patron, she made a noise that sounded like someone had stepped on a duck!
Duck Fart Ingredients
- Baileys Irish Cream: This creamy liqueur has notes of vanilla and coffee.
- Cost: ~$10-$20
- Strength: 34 proof or 17% ABV
- Also Great In: Mudslides, Chocolate Martinis, and Hot Cocoa
- Kahlua: This sweet liqueur has bold coffee notes with a hint of vanilla.
- Cost:~$10-$15
- Strength: 40 Proof or 20% ABV
- Also Great In: Colorado Bulldogs
- Whiskey: I like using Crown Royal Whiskey: Its caramel notes go great with this dessert drink. Jim Beam Vanilla or Canadian Club would also work well.
- Cost: $30
- Strength: 80 Proof or 40% ABV
- Also Great In: Black Eyed Susans
How To Make a Duck Fart Shot
- Pour Kahlua into a glass.
- Top with Baileys and whiskey.
Duck Fart Shot vs. B52 Shot
The B52 and the Duck Fart shot both feature layers of Kahlua and Baileys. However, the B52 is topped with Grand Marnier instead of whiskey.
Tips
- Use a Bar Spoon: Pouring the alcohol directly into the glass may mix your layers. Instead, use pour them onto the back of a bar spoon to reduce splashing, and give you three district layers. A bar spoon is just a spoon with an extra long handle, if you don’t have one in your house try using a tablespoon instead.
- Don’t Touch: Don’t allow the spoon to touch the layer below it. In scientific terms, this will break the surface tension and the layers will mix.
- Keep the Order: Layered drinks need to have the liquid with the highest sugar content on the bottom or they’ll run together.
- Drink Quickly: Down these in one go, they’re not made for sipping.
- Make just before serving for the best results.
