A Shirley Temple drink in a glass with ice and a maraschino cherry.

I spent nearly every Friday night of my childhood at the bar. Now before you run off to call social services, let me explain. On Fridays, our whole family always went to the local dive bar for beer-battered cod, waffle fries, and coleslaw. As a kid, I turned my nose up at fish, so I enjoyed mac and cheese and a Shirley Temple.

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

ingredients including grenadine, sprite, maraschino cherries, and ice cubes.
  • Grenadine: Grenadine is a pomegranate-flavored syrup. Look for it in the grocery or liquor store near mixers such as tonic water. I like the brand Rose's.
  • Sprite: You can use any soda you like, such as Sierra Mist or even ginger ale. For a less sweet drink, use club soda instead.
  • Maraschino Cherry Juice: This is the secret ingredient that makes it tastes just like I remember.

  1. So fun!!! This brings back so many great childhood memories! I loved Shirley Temples and ordered them just about any chance I got...and then I was introduced to alcohol and promptly forgot about them! 🙂 I need to remember to serve these for the kids (and myself) on a special occasion. Love it!

    1. Haha alcohol can make us forget a lot of things. 😉
