a chocolate oreo milkshake with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and frosting with mini Oreos.

I love Oreos and always have a pack in the house. I've previously used them in fun recipes like Oreo Cheesecake, Oreo Cake, and even Oreo Pancakes. They're also great in this cookies and cream milkshake. It is rich, creamy, and tastes like it came from an expensive ice cream shop!

Why This Recipe Works: A Sprinkle of Food Science

  1. Small Amount of Milk: This keeps it thick enough that it feels indulgent, but still allows you to eat it with a straw instead of spoon.
  2. Use High Quality Ice Cream: This ensures it is rich and creamy not thin and icy.
  3. Add Hot Fudge: This secret ingredient makes it taste like it came from your favorite malt shop.

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

ingredients including chocolate ice cream, whole milk, oreos, hot fudge, and whipped cream.
  • Ice Cream: I love the flavor of chocolate ice cream and I feel like it also helps cut the sweetness a bit. Tillamook is my favorite. Haagen Dazs and Turkey Hill are also fantastic. Vanilla also works. Whatever flavor you choose look for a premium brand. Avoid frozen dairy desserts which are lower in fat and higher in air, and tend to make icy shakes.
  • Milk: Use whole milk for the creamiest shake. Chocolate milk would also be yummy.
  • Oreos: I used Double Stuf as that's what I keep on hand for snacking. I like the extra pop of sweetness, but use your favorite variety. Peanut butter, Oreo, or even the latest limited edition batch would likely be delish.

Krystle's Tips: Steal My Culinary School Secrets

  1. Chill Your Glass: This ice cream shop trick keeps your shake ice cold and prevents it from melting too quickly. 10-15 minutes in the freezer should do the trick!
  2. Adjustments: If too thick for your liking add a little more milk. If too thin, add extra ice cream.
