My strawberry Mojito features smooth rum and juicy strawberries. This easy summer drink is so refreshing!
Strawberries are one of my favorite cocktail ingredients. I love using them to make margaritas, mimosas, and of course, daiquiris.
On a hot summer day, it’s hard to beat mojitos thought. They’re perfect for summer and enjoying time with friends and family.
This strawberry mojito is the perfect refresher to help you beat the heat. It’s not too sweet or overbearing and lets the natural flavor of refreshing strawberries shine through.
Why I Love This Drink
- Fresh: Juicy strawberries and cool mint are a wonderful combination.
- Common Ingredients: No fancy or hard to find ingredients, and only one alcohol required.
- Pretty: It tastes as good as it looks.
Perfect For
- Picnics and BBQ
- Patriotic Holidays like the 4ht of July or Memorial Day
- Game Night
History/Origin
The history of the beloved Mojito dates back to the sixteenth century and is thought to be a variation on a similar cocktail called the El Draque. The main difference? It called for aguardiente (a predecessor of rum) instead of the white rum used in the Mojito today.
The Mojito’s first recorded appearance was in a manual published by an infamous Havana bar called Sloppy Joe’s.
Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips
- Club Soda: Club soda is carbonated water that contains minerals and salt. Unlike typical seltzer it also contains potassium which gives it a slightly saltier taste. Because of this it often used as a mixer in cocktails because it can help cut the drink’s sweetness.
- White Rum:White rum is a type of light-bodied rum that is usually clear or has a very pale color. It is made from sugarcane juice or molasses and typically has a higher alcohol content than dark rum. It has a light crisp flavor. I am partial to using Bacardi.
- Lime Juice: With only a few ingredients, each one is important. Use freshly squeezed lime juice if at all possible. The bottled version tends to be too acidic often with a strange aftertaste.
- Strawberries: When picking strawberries, look for bright red ones with green leaves still attached. Avoid strawberries that are bruised. You can also check to see if the strawberry’s skin is easy to pierce through with a fingernail by gently pressing it with your thumb. Be sure to store strawberries in the fridge for optimal freshness.
- Can I Use Frozen Berries? Frozen ones will work in a pinch if you can’t find fresh berries. Just be sure to thaw them completely and drain any excess water before adding them to your drink. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a watered down drink.
How To Make a Strawberry Mojito
- Blend strawberries, lime juice, white rum, and club soda.
- Top with more club soda.
- Garnish with mint and a lime wedge.
Mojito vs. Daiquiri
The Mojito is a refreshing Cuban cocktail that has become popular worldwide. It contains white rum, mint, lime, sugar, and sparkling water. A daiquiri contains fewer ingredients, with only rum, lime juice, and sugar in the zippy, bright cocktail.
The Mojito takes it up a notch with muddled lime and mint for an energizingly delicious kick.
How Strong Is This Drink?
This drink is around 16 proof or 8% ABV. This equals a little over 1 standard drink.
Tips
- Avoid Bitter Drinks: If your Mojito tastes bitter, you may need to dial back on the muddling. When mint is torn or crushed, it releases the chlorophyll from the leaves instead of the minty oils. So, be sure to lightly muddle the leaves until you smell the minty aroma, and then stop! The other reason? Make sure you don’t forget the sugar!
- Serve a Crowd: Serving a crowd make it in a pitcher!
- Multiply and Muddle: You can multiply the recipe by how many servings you need and create the recipe following the same basic instructions. However, this method may require a bit more muscle when it comes time to muddle! Simply follow the recipe to build the drink in your pitcher, top it off with club soda, and stir it (instead of the traditional shake).
- Or Make a Syrup: Muddling a ton of mint can be a pain, so you can swap in a simple mint syrup as a substitute! To make a mint syrup:
- Place the mint leaves in a pan with equal parts sugar and water.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer until the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Lower the heat and let it sit for approximately five minutes.
- Once it’s cooled, strain the syrup into another container.
- You can then swap in the mint syrup for your standard sugar syrup. Less muscle, same great flavor!
- To ramp up the strawberry flavor, try swapping in strawberry-flavored seltzer water for an extra layer of refreshing fruitiness.
- Get More Juice From Your Limes: If you feel like you aren’t getting a lot of juice out of your limes, roll them in your hands or pop them in the microwave for 10 (ish) seconds. The heat helps release all the citrus goodness.
