Why I Love This Drink
- Cheap: Make multiple servings of this drink for what you’d pay for one Starbucks beverage.
- Easy: This drink is ready in minutes with just 4 common ingredients (plus ice).
- Coffee Free: Not a java fan? This drink uses tea instead of coffee.
History
The Pink drink on the Starbucks menu is officially called a Strawberry Acai Refresher. It was originally a secret menu drink, but its popularity made it an official drink. It is believed to have been inspired by the Asian beverage strawberry milk tea.
This drink was first introduced at the end of 2009.

Ingredient Notes
- Acai Tea: Acai tea is a green tea blend of naturally occurring substances including antioxidants, amino acids, and mono sugars. It has been tied to health benefits and weight loss. However, in this recipe, we’ll use it to add flavor and a caffeine boost. You can use your favorite tea blend. Passionfruit, green tea, or even vanilla would be yummy options.
- Strawberries: You can use fresh or frozen.
- Coconut Milk: Coconut milk is a white, semi-solid food produced from soaking and grinding raw coconut with hot water. The raw coconut meat is grated down to form a slurry and the slurry is then heated in water. It has more fat than typical non-dairy milk leading to an ultra-creamy drink. Look for it in the Asian section of your grocery store.
How To Make the Starbucks Pink Drink At Home
- Blend: Combine strawberries, sugar, tea, and ice in the blenders.
- Pour in coconut milk.
How To Hull Strawberries
To easily hull strawberries insert a knife near the stem. Turn the strawberry (not the knife) to cut around the tough center. Discard the hulls. To skip this step you can use frozen or precut berries.
Does This Drink Contain Caffeine?
Because of the tea, this drink does contain a small amount of caffeine. If serving to kids or sensitive individuals decaf tea can be substituted.
Tips
- Adjust the sugar to your desired level of sweetness. You could also use simple syrup, honey, or a sugar-free option if desired.
- Serve in a tall glass with a straw.
- Garnish with fresh mint leaves or your favorite berries to make it your own.
- Use fruit juice ice cubes to avoid a watered-down drink.
- Steep your tea for as long or short as you prefer. I usually go for around 3-5 minutes.
