Orange Fluff

Save For Later

This orange fluff is as light as air and comes together in minutes. It tastes just like an orange creamsicle and is perfect for parties.

orange jello salad with mandarin oranges topped with mini marshmallows in a blue ceramic bowl.

Serve with ribscorn on the cob, Caesar pasta salad, bacon broccoli salad, and a burger for the perfect summer picnic.

I love cold salads, such as cheesecake fruit salad, pea salad, and frog eye salad. You know, if I'm eating a salad, it has Cool Whip and Marshmallows, not veggies. 😉 They're so refreshing and easy to make, too. This orange fluff is going to become your new favorite for every occasion. I've made it so many times I can practically make it in my sleep!

It is great for potlucks, picnics, and holiday dinners. We also love it for holidays with an orange theme, like Halloween. It can easily be doubled to serve a larger crowd and is always quick to disappear.

Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips

  • Orange Jello: You can use regular or sugar-free. I used regular.
  • Instant Vanilla Pudding: Again, you can use regular or sugar-free. I used regular French vanilla.
  • Cool Whip: I used the extra creamy variety, but any will work fine. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
    • Never microwave it, which can cause it to separate.
    • If you're short on time, you can also thaw it in a dish of cold water for 30-40 minutes, changing the water out every 10-15 minutes.
    • Mandarin Oranges: Be sure to drain before you use them. You can use any other canned fruit such as peaches in their place.

❓FAQs❓

Can You Make It Ahead?

Yes, make it up to one day in advance. The longer it sits the more juices the oranges release which can make the marshmallows soggy. Consider adding them right before serving.

Can I Use Homemade Whipped Cream?

No, I do not suggest that. It doesn't hold up well especially with acidic ingredients like oranges. Homemade whipped cream will make it runny instead of creamy.

Can I Use Fresh Oranges?

Technically, yes but I would not. Mandarin oranges are sweeter and more tender. Fresh oranges can be more sour and have an unpleasant texture.

️Tips ️

  1. Chill this mandarin orange salad before serving to allow everything to come together. It tastes even better the next day.
  2. Mix gently so that the cool whip stays light and airy.
  3. Drain oranges to avoid an overly watery dish.

I tried to give 5 stars but the last one wouldn't light up! This is great! I added an extra cup of marshmallows and about 1/2cup coconut. It's very refreshing ☺️❤️

I love this recipe, it's perfect especially for a spring or summer side dish, and I've started experimenting with other jello/fruit combos!

    3. Michelle Billington says:

Do we need to use multiple boxes of sugar free jello/pudding to equal the 3oz from original recipe or does it matter?

      Thank you

      1. Krystle Smith says:

Great question Michelle! I believe 3 ounces is the smallest available box of pudding and jello both regular and sugar free. If I'm wrong on this (totally possible) I'd try to keep the measurements the same the first time you make it and then tweak from there.

    4. Vickey Woodby says:

Do you drain the juice from the mandarin oranges?

      1. Krystle Smith says:

        Yes they should be drained.
