My frozen mudslide is a thick and creamy cocktail with rich chocolate and coffee flavors. This boozy adult milkshake is a must-try if you like chocolate.
I love rich and creamy cocktails like Colorado Bulldogs, or Pina Coladas. Mudslides are amazing too.
This rich chocolate drink was created in the Cayman Islands in the 1970s. Rumor has it a bartender was out of heavy cream when a customer ordered a White Russian so he had to use Irish cream instead. What a yummy substitute!
Half dessert, half drink, 100% delicious. They’re perfect for treating yourself after a hot summer day.
Bonus: So much cheaper than the $8 version at your local bar or steakhouse.
Why I Love This Drink
- Rich and Creamy: Blending with ice cream turns this cocktail into a thick slurpable milkshake.
- Chocolate x 2: We use chocolate syrup and creme de cacao for that rich chocolate flavor you crave.
- Sweet Flavor: You can hardly taste the booze in this recipe.
- Eye Catching: Coat the rim with sprinkles, and top with chocolate chips for acute presentation.
What Is a Mudslide?
This cocktail is rich, chocolatey, and of course, has plenty of booze. The flavor is sweet, and it doesn’t have an overwhelming alcoholic taste. It almost reminds me of a boozy Starbucks Frappe! Half dessert, have cocktail they are 100% delicious!!
Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips
- Chocolate Vodka: I love the flavor of chocolate vodka, but feel free to use regular or another flavor of your choice.
- Irish Cream: I used Baileys which is made of Irish whiskey with a hint of chocolate in the background. Even though it is cream-based it will keep for up to a year. Refrigerate after opening. I always reach for Baileys, but homemade Irish cream would be lovely too. Use leftovers in our Irish Coffee.
- Kahlua: Kahlua is a deep coffee-flavored rum liqueur. Store in a cool dark place such as your liquor cabinet or in a cabinet. Please note this does contain a small amount of caffeine.
- Creme De Cacao: A chocolate-flavored liqueur that is slightly less sweet than typical chocolate liquor.
- Chocolate Ice Cream: Oh yeah! We’re making a boozy milkshake! Feel free to substitute your favorite flavor like fudge brownie, mint chocolate, or even cake batter.
Fun Variations
- Classic: Skip the ice cream and shake the remaining ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Serve over ice for a classic on the rocks drink.
- Flavored Vodka: Consider Whipped Cream, Vanilla, Cake Batter Espresso,or even Marshmallow. A fruity flavor like strawberry would also be a yummy twist for a chocolate-covered strawberry-type drink.
- Rumchata: Swap out Baileys for Rumchata for a cinnamon twist that reminds me of a chocolate snickerdoodle.
- Float: Instead of blending scoop ice cream into the drink.
- Mix up the Liquor: Use brandy or whiskey instead of vodka.
- Non-Alcoholic: Make a nonalcoholic version of this drink by using coffee, chocolate milk, chocolate syrup, Bailey’s Coffee Cream, and ice cream.
