Ingredient Notes
For the Cupcakes
- Dry Ingredients: Flour, Baking Powder, and Salt
- Butter
- Sugar
- Eggs
- Lime Juice: If you’re looking for a way to get the most juice from your lime, try to roll the lime on the counter first. Rolling it over and over again while adding a little bit of pressure is a great way to get the most lime juice possible. Microwaving for 10-15 seconds can also help. Use fresh lime juice if at all possible, it is much more flavorful, and much less acidic than what you find in a bottle.
- Lime Zest: Lime zest is simply the outer lime peel. Using a zester, slowly rub it over the green peel. Avoid the white part underneath which tends to be bitter. Combining lime juice and lime zest gives these cupcakes the perfect flavor.
- Tequila: There are several different types and brands of tequila that you can choose from. I suggest a silver (clear) tequila as that is what is typically used in margaritas. For this recipe I used Patron.
- Vanilla
- Milk: I use whole milk for the best flavor/texture.
For the Tequila Lime Buttercream: Strawberry Buttercream would also be yummy here.
- Butter
- Powdered Sugar
- Lime Juice
- Lime Zest
- Tequila
- Heavy Cream
- Lime Slices, For Garnish if Desired

Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Make Them Nonalcoholic?
Absolutely! Leave out the tequila. You could use another extract like vanilla or orange instead or simply leave it out. Also, be sure to skip the step where you dip the cupcakes in the tequila. You’ll still have a delicious lime-flavored treat that won’t get you tipsy! That way, everyone can enjoy in on the cupcake fun!
Can You Make Them Ahead?
Yes you can certainly make them ahead for Cinco de Mayo or a birthday party. Be sure to store in an air tight container so they do not dry out. For best results make no more than 3 days in advance.

If you’re looking for a great cupcake recipe that is simple and easy to make, this is one that you won’t want to overlook.
I noticed in the directions for mixing the batter, you say to mix the flour, baking soda , baking powder and salt together.
In the the ingredients list, I don’t see baking soda listed. Is this a misprint? I am not adding the soda, as I am making these right now. Hope they turn out.
Hi Virginia,
I’m sorry for any confusion. There is no soda, that was a typo on my part. I updated the recipe to reflect this.
Trying to make these but I am a little confused where the 1 cup of tequila comes in? I saw the 1 tbsp but not sure if the remaining 1 cup would just be used for brushing?
Hi Khimberly,
I love the spelling of your name. -secret handshake of people with uniquely spelled K names-
One cup of tequila is used for brushing after baking. I’m sorry for any confusion!
