How to: Wear Matte Lipstick

I always love a matte lip when going out to a fancy event. Gloss and shiny lipsticks tend to look too flashy and juvenile in more elegant environments. However, a matte lip has its share of problems as well. Flakiness, bleeding over, and cracks are just a few of the problems that can occur. Over time I have developed some tried and true tips to get the perfect matte lip every time.

1.Prep Your lips using a lip scrub to make them smooth.

You may not think your lips need a scrubbing, but just wait until you get that lipstick on. Every flaw will be exposed if you don’t prepare.

There are great premade options(I like Lush’s Bubblegum one) available.

However, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on lip scrubs. You can also go into your kitchen and mix a teaspoon of sugar with a couple of drops of olive oil. Voila, lip scrub is ready!

Just rub this mixture on your dry lips for about a full minute and wipe off with a warm, damp cloth. Your lips will be smooth and moisturized.

2.Define lips with a a lip pencil in nude or the same color as your lipstick.

The line you draw around your lips with this pencil will keep the lipstick and place and stop it from meandering onto your face.

It should be a matte pencil as well to blend perfectly. If you have a steady hand, just draw around your lip edges. If your hand is not so steady feel free to make dots around the edges and connect them all when you’re done.

3.Apply Lipstick: Swipe your lipstick on your top and bottom lips, ensuring that you’ve covered everything. Afterwards, squeeze and release your lips to distribute it evenly.

4. Set: Matte lipstick needs to be set as it is harder to touch up. Just apply a light dusting of translucent powder.
