This greyhound cocktail features tart grapefruit and smooth liquor. It is super refreshing and perfect for brunch.
Can you ever go wrong with a gin and juice combo? The greyhound drink is refreshing, easy, and perfect for any time of the year. I love serving it for brunch alongside things like pancakes and bacon burgers.
This cocktail features tart grapefruit juice and smooth liquor. It is just tart enough without being sour. It is basically a cape codder made with grapefruit juice instead of cranberry.
I like it as is, but you can certainly add some simple syrup to sweeten it up if you’d prefer.
P.S. The grapefruit juice makes it appropriate for breakfast right?!
Origin
This cocktail was originally invented in the 1930s. It was often served at restaurants found in the Greyhound bus station which led to this unique name.
The drink was made early on with gin. However, more modern versions tend to use vodka instead.
Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips
Vodka: Use a mid-level variety that you enjoy drinking. A flavored vodka such as grapefruit, orange, or peach would also work well.
Grapefruit: Use freshly squeezed grapefruit juice if possible for the best flavor. One grapefruit should provide the amount of juice needed.
How To Make a Greyhound Cocktail
- Juice: Cut grapefruit in half and squeeze the juice into a bowl or measuring cup.

Oh wow! What a refreshing and cooling drink! Perfect after working in the yard all day! My husband especially loved this drink. Definitely, one I will make again!
I love grapefruit juice in drinks! This was so refreshing! I took your suggestion and added a splash of Sprite to the drink for a little bubble action. It was really good. I might change it up and use Squirt next time to maintain the grapefruit flavor but still add the lovely bubbles. Super delish. Thanks!
Perfect for our ladies night out. Thanks for sharing. Will try this recipe.
Got another drink to try! I’m sure my girlfriends would love these for brunch. Thanks for sharing the recipe. xoxo
