Fleas and tapeworms go together like the most disgusting peanut butter and jelly ever. Most people know that fleas cause skin irritation and itching when they bite. What a lot of people don’t know is that fleas carry tapeworm. So fleas and tapeworms are easily a package deal. Which is so totally disgusting, I can’t even right now.

Fleas and Tapeworms – A Perfectly Disgusting Match

Here’s the lowdown on fleas and tapeworms. They’re two disgusting sides of the same coin. Fleas carry tapeworm eggs. Yep. So your dog can potentially get tapeworm if he isn’t protected from fleas. Here’s how.

Dogs Can Contract Tapeworm by:

    • Ingesting fleas during self-grooming

    • Ingesting fleas as they chew to relieve bite itchiness

    • Ingesting fleas on a dead animal

IVs are no fun!!

Resting in my crate until I feel better!

Nice. In addition to that, tapeworm infections are generally discovered when the dog starts passing tapeworm segments. They look like small white worms which can be on your dog’s rectum, in his feces, and even on his bedding or in other places where he commonly lays or sleeps. Double nice. Is anyone else gagging here, or is it just me?

Do you know what’s even worse than all that? Fleas are nigh on indestructible. They can survive almost anything. Even in super cold weather, they can survive if they manage to get on a warm animal or make their way to an animals living area where it’s nice and warm. Even in the absence of finding a warm place, they can survive within pupal casings as pre-emerged adults, protecting themselves from the elements. They are like tiny little disgusting terminators!

And once they find a host and a nice cozy place, the females can make 40 to 50 eggs per day – which, by the way, can survive for up to 3 months – within 24 hours of having their first blood meal. Blood meal. Every part of them is gross. So what we have is an ultra durable, energizer bunny of blood sucking and egg laying. Oh yeah, and if our dogs eat them they get worms. Awesome.

Fleas and Tapeworms – Killing Two Gross Birds with One Stone

Are you loving all this wonderful information so far? Good! You aren’t supposed to. 😉 Here’s what you do. Give your dogs Virbac® SENTINEL® SPECTRUM®. These chews protect your dog from fleas and tapeworms as well as heartworm, roundworm, and whipworm. So pretty much every gross thing imaginable. In addition to killing adult fleas, the unique ingredient, lufenuron, found in Sentinel products prevents fleas from developing into adults. Which means that it’s perfect for total protection as well as combating possible infestations of the home or re-infestations.

Fleas and tapeworms are gross. So are all the other gross parasites that Sentinel protects your dog from. Give him Sentinel Spectrum Beef Flavored chews once a month to protect him from fleas and tapeworms, as well as heartworm, roundworm, and whipworm. All of which are super disgusting. When all you have to do is give your dog a chew that he will gobble up in two seconds, there’s no reason not to do it.
