Flaky apple dumplings chock-full of apples and topped with a sinful brown sugar butter sauce. I love making this easy treat, it comes together quickly. Can you guess my secret ingredient?
If you’re anything like me Fall has you craving all things apple and pumpkin. I love making seasonal recipes like apple cupcakes or poke cake.
The apple picking season is fast approaching and with that comes the need to find yummy new recipes. These easy apple dumplings are sure to become a new favorite.
However, if you ask me to bake you something for breakfast especially on a Fall morning one of 3 things will happen:
1. I will throw my alarm clock (read: tablet) at your face. OUCH! #notsorry
2. I will scream at you: I WAS JUST UP FEEDING THE DOGS AT 5 AM, HOW DARE YOU REAWAKEN ME. IF YOU DON’T HAVE A WAGGING TAIL GO AWAY!
3. I’ll cover up my head and pretend you don’t exist. Am I the only person that likes sleeping with my head under the covers? Yes? Okay then…
However, even a lazy late sleeper like me can handle making these for breakfast. They’re yummy and nearly foolproof.
They’re SO easy you can make them in the morning before school, or even the night ahead..
Promise me you’ll try this recipe at least once?
Why These Dumplings Are a Must Try
- Easy: These start with crescent rolls which I always keep on hand. No fancy folding techniques are required.
- Fresh Apples: Fresh and juicy apples are inside our flaky crust.
- Sauce: Mountain Dew + Brow sugar makes the most addicting sauce ever! Love Mountain Dew? Be sure to check out my Mountain Dew Cocktails post too.
Ingredient Notes
- Apples: I like using Granny Smith apples when baking as the tartness helps balance our sweet sauce. Other types of apples that are good for baking include Honeycrisp, Gala, and Jonathan.
If you like the flavor of the apple for snacking it will work just fine in this recipe. - Crescent Rolls: You can also use refrigerated biscuit dough or pie dough for a flakier dumpling if you’d prefer.
- Brown Sugar: Pack brown sugar into the cup with you measure it. It will lend a caramel flavor to the sauce.
- Cinnamon: If you haven’t baked with your cinnamon since last Fall, replace it. Cinnamon loses its flavor after around 6-12 months in the pantry.
- Mountain Dew: Mountain Dew gives a sweet citrus flavor. You can substitute the 1 ½ cups of another soda like Sprite or Ginger Ale. Apple cider or apple juice would also work well.
How to Make Apple Dumplings Using Crescent Rolls
- Prep work: Preheat oven and grease pan.
- Prep Apples: Peel, core, and cut apples.
- Assembly: Roll a piece of apple into each crescent roll.
- Make the sauce: Melt butter. Stir in brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour over dumplings. Top off with soda.
- Bake: Bake for 40-45 minutes.
How To Core An Apple
There are multiple ways to core apples.
- Corer: First, you can get an apple corer and push it right into the apple. It will slice it up into quarters and remove the core in one push.
- Knife: The other option is to use a knife. You can take the apple with the stem side up on a stable cutting board or safe-cutting space, poke the knife into the top of the apple near the stem, push the knife all the way through the apple to the other side, being careful to keep your fingers out of the way while you hold the apple in place. With the knife inside the apple, turn it sideways around the stem area to cut out the entire core of the apple. This is a harder method, but still doable if you don’t have a corer in your kitchen.
Leftovers
- Storage: Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Be sure to keep them in an airtight container or tightly covered with plastic wrap/foil.
- Reheat: Warm up in the microwave for 30-45 seconds or until warmed through. You can also reheat in a 350-degree oven for 5-7 minutes.
- Freeze: Allow your apple dumplings to cool before placing each in an airtight container, or plastic bag. Freeze for up to 4 months.
- Then place into a freezer baggie and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge before reheating.
Tips
- Faster Prep: Use an apple corer to speed up prep.
- Even Pieces: Slice apples into small uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.
- Rest: Allow to sit before serving as the sauce will thicken as it cools.
- Wow Factor: Serve with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream ,and/or caramel sauce for an extra decadent treat.
- Use your favorite fruit if apples are not in season. Peaches, blueberries, or cherries would also be yummy. You could even use pie filling.
