This Butterfinger poke cake features moist yellow cake and rich caramel sauce topped off with a generous amount of Butterfingers. This luscious cake is so easy to make with only 5 ingredients.
Poke Cakes are such a crowd-pleaser. So far I’ve shared strawberry, banana pudding, and chocolate versions here on the blog. They are easy to make and always go over well. This Butterfinger poke cake goes over especially well with its moist crumb, and decadent caramel sauce. Then, the whole thing topped off with candy bars. Who doesn’t love candy?
Poke cakes have been around since the 1970s. They are simply a sheet cake that you poke holes in using a wooden spoon and then fill with Jello, pudding, or like in this recipe sweetened condensed milk.
They’re great to take to summer BBQs, church suppers, or family reunions.
Why Love This Recipe
- Easy: This easy recipe has only a few common ingredients and is ready in around 30 minutes.
- Serves a crowd: Perfect for sharing, and easy to transport. No more juggling a cake dish, or cupcakes in the car.
- Decadent Flavors: Cake+Caramel+Candy=mouth explosion!
Ingredient Notes and Shopping Tips
- Cake Mix: I used Duncan Hines’ yellow box mix. Feel free to use your favorite. Chocolate would be a yummy twist! A homemade sheet cake can also be used.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk: As its name suggests sweetened condensed milk has had some of its water removed, and sugar added. This gives it the perfect creamy texture, without excess liquid to weigh our cake down. It is also amazing in coffee! Look for it in the baking aisle near the powdered milk.
- Caramel Sauce: I used Smucker’s sundae syrup here. Look for it near the ice cream cones and hot fudge.
- Butterfingers: Feel free to use your favorite candy bar here. Twix or Snickers would be delicious. You can also use Heath bars for a classic “Better Than Anything” cake.
How To Make Butterfinger Poke Cake
- Bake cake: Make cake according to package directions.
- Poke: Poke holes in the cake and pour over sweetened condensed milk and caramel.
- Top: Cool and then top with Cool Whip and crushed Butterfinger candy.
Tips and Tricks
- If you forget to thaw your Cool Whip try floating it in a bowl of warm water. Do not microwave it, or it may separate.
- Cook the cake for 5 minutes before poking your holes. This will make sure your cake is set, but still warm enough to absorb all your yummy caramel filling.
- Easily crush butterfingers by using a rolling pin, or a wooden spoon.
Storage
Refrigerate: Store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Freeze: Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Easy and delish!
The recipe appears to be “unfinished.” After you pour on the condensed milk and caramel,
is this when you add the cool whip and chopped butterfingers? I make a similar cake with
Heath bars, but my husband loves butterfingers. Can’t wait to try this one.
I’m so sorry Claudia. You are exactly right I just updated the recipe, thanks for pointing it out. 🙂
I cannot find the recipe for the Butterfinger Poke Cake. I have clicked on the other cakes and they have recipes but I can’t find the Butterfinger one. Where can I find it?
