Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Recipe
It’s Friday night. You’ve had a long week at the office ,or with the kids, and you’re looking to relax in front of a movie while enjoying a tasty pizza. The only problem is, you’re bored of the same old pepperoni and mushroom that you’ve been chowing down on for years. You’ve seen the advertisements for Papa John’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza, but you’re trying to save a little cash this month. So what do you do?
Don’t despair, I’ve got an amazing homemade bacon cheeseburger pizza recipe for you! Hands down this is one of the best pizzas I’ve ever made! And I’ve made a lot: Buffalo Chicken, Crab Rangoon, and even a Pizza Cake! The crispy bacon, tangy pickles, and flavorful sauce make this pizza a true winner! This Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza recipe is a keeper!
This pizza is made in 3 simple steps: Dough, sauce, and toppings. You’ll want to begin by gathering all your ingredients ahead of time. The French call this: Mise en place (Or everything in place). I call it a time saver that will stop you from rummaging around your kitchen like a crazy woman! You will need: All-purpose flour, pizza yeast, white sugar, salt, warm water, extra virgin olive oil, Thousand Island Dressing, ground beef, Colby Jack cheese, bacon, dill pickles , and shredded lettuce. The ingredient combination has caused my family to dub it the Big Mac Pizza!
For the Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Dough
If you intend to make the pizza immediately, preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (it is possible to freeze the dough for later use if you desire).
First, mix the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt together in a large mixing bowl. Next, add the warm (not hot) water and the olive oil. The sugar gives the yeast something to eat while they do their thing. Mix until well-combined
Then we need to knead the dough until it no longer sticks to our fingers.
How To Freeze Pizza Dough
If you’d like to make the dough in advance, place it in a freezer bag and freeze it for up to three months. The night before you’re ready to make your pizza, move it to the fridge (it will need to thaw for at least 12 hours). Prior to using it, let the dough sit on the countertop at room temperature for thirty minutes or so to soften. It is awesome having homemade frozen pizza crust you can pop out and bake. So much better than cardboard frozen pizza. I like to put mine in the fridge before work, and take it out to bake when I get home!
Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Toppings
The topping are just as easy to prepare. First, heat a large skillet over medium/high heat, then add the ground beef. While your beef is cooking, spread the Thousand Island Dressing over the pizza crust until there is an even layer, then top with the Colby Jack cheese and bacon. Also, add the beef after it is cooked.
After removing from the oven, top pizza with the shredded lettuce and pickles.
Papa John’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza
So how does this pizza compare to the classic Papa John’s Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza? Papa John’s specialty has cheddar and mozzarella (instead of Colby Jack), pickles that are baked into the cheese, and chunks of Roma tomatoes. The good thing about making this pizza at home is you can customize it exactly to your family’s taste. Heated pickles and tomatoes get a NO from me! But if you want to bake the pickles in with the cheese t,hen just add them when you add the bacon. In addition, you can certainly use cheddar cheese instead. Feel free to make it your own!
Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Sauce
While Papa John’s claims that their Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza has a special burger sauce, any die-hard fan knows that most specialty burger condiments are just Thousand Island Dressing. I love Kraft’s Thousand Island with bacon, SO good. However, you can also easily make your own Thousand Island by using mayonnaise, ketchup, and sweet pickle relish. Some people also throw in diced onion, garlic, or a splash of hot sauce to kick it up.
Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Calories
Our bacon cheeseburger pizza has about 408 calories per slice. It is worth every single calorie. It also has both less fat and sodium than the Papa John’s version. You know I’m not into health food ,but if I can make homemade pizza taste better with less fat/sodium I’m game!
Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Shopping Tips
I like using Pizza yeast because it requires no time to rise! It also helps your pizza keep its shape when you roll it out. You can find it in little envelopes next to the yeast in the baking aisle.
I swear by microwave bacon for recipes like this. My favorite is Hormel’s Black Label. It cooks up quick with no mess while we work on the other steps in our recipe.
