How To Prevent & Treat Dry Skin

As soon as the weather gets chilly, my skin gets dry. My hands, and feet especially feel like they’ve just had all the moisture sucked right out of them. Here are a few things I’ve learned through trial and error that help me prevent and treat my dry skin.

Preventing Dry Skin:
1. Drink Lots of Water: When you’re not drinking enough water your skin is one of the first places that it shows. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. This helps hydrate you from the inside out!

2. Avoid Hot Bathes/Showers: I know, I know nothing feels better than a screaming hot shower on a cold day. However, it really dries out your skin. Opt for a quick luke warm shower instead, your skin will thank you!

Treating Dry Skin:
1. Exfoliate: It’s hard to moisturize if your skin is dry and flaky. Remove dead skin cells to reveal softer, smoother skin. I like to use a homemade sugar scrub.

2. Moisturize: There are so many lotions and creams on the market it’s hard to know where to start! My new favorite is the Vaseline Intensive Care Deep Moisture Jelly Cream. It’s a rich, thick (but spreadable) cream that comes in a large tub. It contains actual micro droplets of Vaseline jelly.
It instantly boosts moisture by 250% AND keeps skin hydrated for ~18 hours! I love using it on my feet and hands. I wash my hands often and never wear gloves (opps!). Somedays they can feel like sandpaper! But this cream instantly makes them feel hydrated and smooth without feeling greasy.

It’s unscented and hypoallergenic too which is perfect for my sensitive skin!

Vaseline Intensive Care Deep Moisture Jelly is available at food, drug and mass retail outlets for $7.99.

3. Try a Humidifier: Winter heating systems can literally suck the moisture right out of the air. Replace some of it by using a cool mist humidifier. I like to use one while I sleep.
